Japanese matting is a popular choice for koi ponds not only because it can be easily cut to fit your filter, but its thick and robust texture holds it in place in your filter and makes cleaning very straightforward.
Its woven structure provides an ideal surface for biological bacteria to develop and remove harmful waste products from your water, making Japanese matting an excellent filter media choice.
When replacing your Japanese matting, it's worth cutting new sheets to fully fill the filter chamber rather than leaving gaps, as water will always take the path of least resistance and can bypass the media if it's loosely packed. Layering a few sheets together also increases the surface area available for beneficial bacteria, giving your filter more biological capacity without needing a larger unit. If you're unsure how much media your setup needs, our pond filter size recommender can help you work out the right filter capacity for your pond volume before you buy. As a general rule, matting used nearer the pump should be replaced more often, while later stages can be rinsed and reused for longer.
