Japanese Matting Filter Media

When replacing your Japanese matting, it's worth cutting new sheets to fully fill the filter chamber rather than leaving gaps, as water will always take the path of least resistance and can bypass the media if it's loosely packed. Layering a few sheets together also increases the surface area available for beneficial bacteria, giving your filter more biological capacity without needing a larger unit. As a general rule, matting used nearer the pump should be replaced more often, while later stages can be rinsed and reused for longer.
