Good lighting does more than illuminate your tank — it brings out the true colours of your fish and plants and helps live plants photosynthesise properly, which keeps an aquascape looking lush rather than leggy and pale. As a rule of thumb, choose a light sized to the length of your tank rather than its volume, and check the lumen or PAR output if you're growing demanding plant species, as a dim or mismatched unit can leave dark patches or stunted growth at the edges of a larger setup.
