Choosing the right grain size makes a real difference to how your marine setup looks and functions. Finer grades (around 0.8mm-1mm) pack more densely, helping to reduce water flow through the substrate and suiting fish that like to burrow, while coarser grades up to 4mm allow better water movement and are often preferred in reef tanks with strong circulation. It's also worth thinking ahead to bed depth: a shallow sand bed of 2-3cm is easier to keep clean, whereas deeper beds can support beneficial bacteria for natural nitrate reduction. Whichever look you're going for, a good sand base brings out the colours of your fish and corals and gives the whole aquarium a much more natural, established feel.
