As any fish keeper will know, it is essential to add an aquarium dechlorinator or water conditioner to their mains water to make it safe for use in their fish tank.
A fish tank water conditioner works by neutralising the chlorine and chloramine present in tap water when filling an aquarium for the first time or carrying out regular water changes. Without the use of a fish tank dechlorinator, these chemicals can cause upset the balance of the biological bacteria in your tank and ill health for your fish.

When choosing a water conditioner, check the dosing rate against your tank size rather than simply picking the biggest bottle on the shelf: a concentrated formula treating hundreds of litres per capful often works out more economical and lasts far longer than a standard dechlorinator once you're carrying out regular partial water changes. Many conditioners also go beyond neutralising chlorine and chloramine, adding a protective slime coat to reduce stress on fish during handling or transport, which is especially useful when introducing new arrivals. Keeping a bottle by your water butt or mixing station makes routine maintenance quick and mistake-free, helping you keep conditions stable for your fish with minimal fuss and very little ongoing cost.
