Acting quickly at the first signs of illness, such as flicking, clamped fins or tiny white spots, gives your fish the best chance of a full recovery, so it's worth keeping a suitable treatment on hand before you actually need it. When choosing a treatment, always check it's safe for your specific setup, as some medications can harm scaleless species, invertebrates like shrimp and snails, or be removed by activated carbon in your filter, which should be taken out during dosing. Always follow the dosing instructions carefully and treat the full course even if your fish seems to recover early, as stopping too soon can allow the infection to return stronger. Many keepers also find it reassuring to quarantine new arrivals before adding them to a main tank, reducing the risk of introducing disease in the first place.
