Choosing the right size net is the key to good protection: measure the full length and width of your pond and add at least 60-90cm on each side so the netting can be pegged or weighted down on the surrounding grass or paving, rather than sitting flush with the water's edge where herons can simply reach underneath. For larger or irregularly shaped ponds, it's often better to fit a low frame or hoops beneath the net so it stays taut above the surface rather than sagging into the water, which keeps fallen leaves from pooling on top and makes autumn clean-up quicker.
