Aquarium Sump

Choosing the right sump comes down to matching its capacity and baffle layout to your display tank's volume and overflow rate, so water has enough time to settle and degas before it returns to the main tank. As a rough guide, a sump holding around 20-30% of your display volume gives you room to fit equipment comfortably while adding valuable extra water volume, which helps buffer against sudden swings in temperature and water chemistry. This makes for a more stable environment for fish and corals, and a much easier tank to keep balanced day to day. It also means less clutter in your main display, with heaters, skimmers and reactors tucked away out of sight below.
