Buying guide
Choosing the right substrate is about more than colour: grain size affects how easily waste can be siphoned out and whether live plants can root properly, so finer 0.4-2mm sands suit planted tanks and burrowing fish like loaches or corydoras, while a 3-5mm or larger gravel is easier to keep clean in a simple community setup. As a rough guide, aim for a substrate depth of around 4-6cm to give roots and beneficial bacteria room to establish without water going stagnant underneath. Beyond the practicalities, a well-chosen base layer genuinely transforms the look of a tank, bringing out the colours of your fish and making any aquarium plants or décor look far more natural, so it's worth taking the time to picture the finished scene before you buy.
