About the Pond Liner 2 x 2m HDPE 300gsm 40yr Warranty

AllPondSolutions is proud to offer our own branded range of pond liners. This is our heavy-duty HDPE liner at a true 300 grams per square metre, made from 100% virgin polyethylene with a 5% carbon black UV stabiliser.

At 2 x 2m, or 4 metres squared, this is our smallest liner. Allowing for depth and the overlap needed to anchor the edges, it gives a pond of around 80cm across at 30cm deep. That is a proper wildlife pond: enough open water for frogs, newts, dragonflies and visiting birds, and small enough to dig in an afternoon.

Not sure what size you need?

Before you order, it is worth two minutes with our pond liner size calculator. Put in your pond length, width and depth and it will tell you the liner size to buy. A liner that is even slightly short on one side cannot be rescued once the pond is dug, so it is the one thing worth checking twice.

Filtration and volume

A pond this size holds around 130 litres. A wildlife pond can be left to find its own balance, but if you plan to keep fish you will need filtration, and the right filter depends on your volume and stocking rather than on the liner. Our pond filter size recommender and pond pump size calculator will work it out from your own measurements, and the instruction leaflet packed with every liner covers the same ground.

Why we quote the weight, not the thickness

Almost every pond liner in the UK is sold on a nominal thickness figure. Weight is the measure you can actually verify. Cut a square exactly 500mm x 500mm from the sheet, put it on kitchen scales, and it will read 75 grams. Nothing else in this category invites that test.

Solid and smooth, not woven

Many liners sold as HDPE are reinforced woven sheet. The weave shows as a grid pattern through clear water and cut edges can fray. Ours is solid extruded film, so you get a clean black finish and nothing for water to track along if the liner is ever pierced.

Working out the size yourself

Take your pond length and add twice the depth, plus 60cm. Do the same for the width. The extra 60cm leaves a 30cm overlap all the way round to anchor the edges. Always round up to the next size, because you can trim a liner but you cannot add to one.

  • Liner size: 2 x 2m (4 metres squared)
  • 300 g/m2 solid smooth HDPE, approximately 0.32mm
  • 100% virgin high-density polyethylene resin
  • 5% carbon black UV stabiliser for long outdoor life
  • 50% more material than liners commonly sold as 0.3mm
  • Single piece with no welded seam
  • Flexible and straightforward to fit, and easy to trim once in position
  • Black finish, supplied folded in its own box
  • Free pond building advice sheet with every liner
  • 40 year guarantee against UV degradation*

*Guarantee covers UV degradation of the liner material and requires a non-woven underlay to be fitted beneath it. It does not cover punctures, tears or damage caused during installation, by animals or by ground movement. This guarantee is in addition to your statutory rights.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out what size liner I need?

Take your pond length and add twice the depth plus 60cm, then do the same for the width. The extra 60cm leaves a 30cm overlap all round to anchor the edges. Always round up, because you can trim a liner but you cannot add to one. Our pond liner size calculator will do it for you.

What size underlay do I need for this liner?

One 2m x 3m piece of our pond underlay covers this liner with room to spare. You want the liner area plus about 10% for overlapping, which is 4.4 square metres here against the 6 square metres a 2m x 3m piece gives you.

How can I check I have really got 300 g/m2?

Cut a square exactly 500mm by 500mm and put it on kitchen scales. That is a quarter of a square metre, so it should read 75 grams. We publish the weight rather than a nominal thickness precisely because it is the figure you can check yourself.

Is this a woven liner?

No. Many liners sold as HDPE are reinforced woven sheet, which shows a grid pattern through clear water and can fray at cut edges. Ours is solid extruded film with a smooth black finish, so there is nothing for water to track along if it is ever pierced.

Does the liner have any joins?

No. This size is under our 2.1m maximum extrusion width, so it comes off the line as a single piece with no welded seam.

Why do I have to fit underlay?

It is the layer that stops a sharp stone or root working through the liner as the pond settles, and fitting it is a condition of the 40 year guarantee. A liner rarely fails because the material is poor. It fails because something sharp was left underneath it.

What does the 40 year guarantee cover?

It covers UV degradation of the liner material, provided the liner is installed over a non-woven underlay with all exposed edges covered by paving, turf or stone. It does not cover punctures, tears, or damage caused during installation, by animals or by ground movement. This guarantee is in addition to your statutory rights.

Is it safe for fish and plants?

Yes. It is made from virgin polyethylene with no plasticisers, and is suitable for garden ponds, wildlife pools, water features and streams.

Is the liner easy to cut down to fit?

Yes. Although it is a tough sheet it trims easily with scissors or a sharp knife. Fill the pond first, let it settle overnight, then trim the next morning leaving at least 30cm of overlap at the edge.
