About the 1400EF Annual Filter Media Pack

A full year of media in one delivery, sized for your filter. Mechanical floss traps fine debris. Coarse foam does the heavy lifting and holds your bacteria colony. Activated carbon strips discolouration and odour. Run all three and the filter does what it was designed to do.

Important — do not change all your media on the same day

The foam and bio media in your filter hold the bacteria colony that keeps your water safe. It takes weeks to establish and minutes to throw away. Replace it all in one go and your tank effectively starts from scratch — ammonia and nitrite climb, and your fish are the ones that suffer.

Change it in stages:

  • Swap no more than half your foam or bio media at a time
  • Leave 2 to 4 weeks between changes so the new media can colonise
  • Rinse anything you are keeping in tank water only — chlorine from the tap kills bacteria on contact
  • Floss and carbon are the exception. They do a mechanical and chemical job, not a biological one, so they can be replaced in full

Cheaper than buying the media separately, and it arrives as one pack rather than three parcels.

Replace floss monthly and carbon every 4 to 6 weeks — those two are the parts you can safely change in full.

Frequently asked questions

How often should each type of media be changed?

White floss traps the finest debris and clogs fastest - replace it monthly. Black carbon is exhausted after about 4 to 6 weeks and stops adsorbing once it is full. Blue coarse foam should be rinsed rather than replaced, and swapped out only when it starts to break apart.

Should I replace all the foam at once?

No, and this is the single most common mistake. Your biological filtration lives in the coarse foam. Replacing every piece on the same day strips out the bacteria colony and can trigger an ammonia spike. Stagger it - change no more than half at a time, a few weeks apart.

Will this pack fit my filter?

Each pack is cut for one specific filter, named in the title above. Check the model printed on your canister before ordering - the EF range shares a family look but the media sizes differ between models.

What order does the media go in?

Water should meet the coarsest media first and the finest last. Blue coarse foam at the bottom, then your biological media, then white floss, with black carbon last if you are using it. Getting this the wrong way round clogs the fine media almost immediately.

Should I rinse new media before fitting?

A quick rinse in old tank water is worthwhile, particularly for carbon, which can carry fine dust. Never rinse filter media under the tap - chlorine in mains water kills the bacteria you are trying to protect.
