How easy are they to care for?

They are generally easy to care for as long as it has the correct environment to live in. A minimum tank of 26 gallons is recommended for a pair. They require caves and rocks to hide in as they are a bottom-orientated species.

They originate from the Lake Malawi in East Africa.

What is the ideal number to keep together?

Best kept in a pair or a small group of the same species.

What water conditions do they require?

They require a water temperature of 23 - 27 °C and a pH range of 7.5 - 8.5.

What should you feed them?

They are omnivores so food such as flakes, shrimps, and worms is suitable.

How compatible are they with other fish?

The White Top Cichlid is an aggressive and territorial fish. They should be kept in a species-only or mixed mbuna tank. It is best to keep one male with several females.

Can they be bred in captivity?

This species is easy to breed. Males are ready to breed at 8 - 10 months.  Eggs hatch after 14 – 21 days, then fry can eat powdered dry food and brine shrimps.
