Product description

The Red Zebra Mbuna (Maylandia estherae) is also known as the Orange Zebra Mbuna or the Orange Blue Mouth Breeder

Scientific Name:

Maylandia estherae (previously Pseudotropheus Zebra Red).

Approximate purchase size:

All Pond Solutions will always endeavor to supply as close to the approximate size range as possible.  Due to variations from suppliers on rare occasions, this may not always be possible.

How easy are they to care for?

They require a minimum tank size of 55 gallons for two to three females and are a good fish for an intermediate and experienced cichlid keeper due to its moderately aggressive behavior. They require regular partial water changes to stay healthy. They require plenty of caves and to mimic their natural environment.

How large can they grow?

Up to 10cm

Where in the world are they from?

Lake Malawi, Africa.

What is the ideal number to keep together?

The Red Zebra is not considered to be a community fish and is best kept in groups of one male with two or three females.

What water conditions do they require?

A water temperature between 22.8 – 27.8 °C and a pH level between 7 – 7.8 is required.

What should you feed them?

The Red Zebra is an omnivore; it eats flakes, pellets, vegetable foods and occasionally meaty foods such as shrimp and bloodworms.

How compatible are they with other fish?

They can be kept with less aggressive Mbuna cichlids from Malawi that are not the same colour or shape. They can also be kept with some other cichlids that aren’t very aggressive. They will attack other fish of similar shapes and sizes.

Can they be bred in captivity?

They like a flat stone or slate to lay the eggs on in a male territory, but if the male is too aggressive the females will not spawn. Females will lay about 20-30 eggs and they will take 14-21 days to spawn. Fry can be fed powdered dry foods and brine shrimp.
