The Golden Julie (Julidiochromis ornatus) is also known as the Yellow Julie, or the Ornate Julie.

How easy are they to care for?

If they have the correct water quality and tank set up they are easy to keep. They require a minimum aquarium size of 20 gallons, and an efficient filter as they are very sensitive to poor water quality. They require hard, alkaline water and a gravel base.

Up to 8.5cm

Where in the world are they from?

They originate from the Lake Tanganyika in Africa.

What is the ideal number to keep together?

You should buy several and then let them pair up naturally. Once they have paired up they can be territorial so should be closely monitored. A number of 2 males and 6 females is recommended.

What water conditions do they require?

Water temperature should be between 22 - 26°C with a pH level of 7.8 – 9.

What should you feed them?

Julies are omnivores, they can eat flakes, pellets and some worms or shrimps.

How compatible are they with other fish?

Pairs are highly intolerable of other Dwarf Julie species so should be kept with larger cichlid that they are compatible with.

Can they be bred in captivity?

Julies are biparental cave spawners that form strong bonds They are easy to breed but are best kept in their own breeding tanks with plenty of caves and plants for their eggs to be laid.
