What is Brackish water?

Brackish waters are located on where river systems meet the sea, this creates a habitat with some unique and wonderful creatures. A subsequent cause of this is that any of these species kept within the private aquarium require more specific water conditions, culminating in the addition of a small amount of marine salts to recreate their natural surroundings. At All Pond Solutions we keep all brackish fish in an environment of 1.005 SG (see below). Brackish species cannot be kept with the general community fish such as Tetras, Rainbows, Catfish and Gourami. For more information please read our introductory blog on Brackish species.

How large can they grow?

17cm is the largest, but this is rare in aquariums.

Where in the world are they from?

India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia.

What is the ideal number to keep together?

Ideally kept alone.

What water conditions do they require?

Temperatures of 24-28°C and pH of 7.8-9.0. Keep in mind the specific gravity of salt required for brackish species of 1.005 - 1.010.

What should you feed them?

Shellfish are essential for all puffers to help mimick the natural processes requried to keep the teeth/beaks short. Snails, Crabs legs, worms and frozen foods are greedily accepted.

How compatible are they with other fish?

Not suited for general community. It will often harass and nip the fins of tankmates, especially if they are slow-moving or have long fins. In a large aquarium, possible choices include robust, active species such as scats and archerfish

Can they be bred in captivity?

Not known to have been bred by the hobyist.
