How easy are they to care for?

The electric blue hap is different from other mbuna’s as they are open water dwellers, found in areas where rock meets the sand. They are ideal for a beginner mbuna keeper as they are easy to care for as long as they are not overfed. They need a minimum sized aquarium of 55 gallons that is at least 4 feet long. Although they are an open water dweller they still like rocky areas where they can hide.

How large can they grow?

15.49 cm

Where in the world are they from?

The Lake Malawi in East Africa

What is the ideal number to keep together?

One male should be kept with up to 6 females.

What water conditions do they require?

Water temperatures should be between 22.8 - 27.8 ° C with a pH range of 7.7 – 8.6.

What should you feed them?

They are primarily omnivores so foods such as flakes, pellets, worms, and shrimps are suitable.

How compatible are they with other fish?

The Electric Blue Hap is a fairly aggressive species so they should be kept in species only tanks with more females than males. Males will attack each other in attempts to be the dominant fish.

Can they be bred in captivity?

In captivity, the Electric Blue Hap should spawn every 2 months from May to September if the water is of a high quality and they are well kept. The female will lay her eggs then the water movements will push them towards a male to be fertilized, after which the female puts them in her mouth.
