How easy are they to care for?

The Compressed Cichlid Gold is best kept by intermediate and experienced cichlid keepers. It is a relatively peaceful fish that can be kept among others but it is a predator and will eat smaller fish. It requires a minimum aquarium size of 40 gallons for a single adult or 100 gallons for a community. They need a substrate of sand or gravel as they are active and will swim at the bottom and middle areas of the tank. They require water changes of 10 – 15% each week.

How large can they grow?

Up to 18 cm

Where in the world are they from?

Lake Tanganyika in Africa

What is the ideal number to keep together?

They are a community fish and are best kept in a species only tank or with other suitable species.

What water conditions do they require?

The water temperature should be between 25 - 30 °C and a pH range of 7.5 – 8.5.

What should you feed them?

They are a carnivorous species, they will occasionally eat flakes and pellets but their diet should be meaty foods.

How compatible are they with other fish?

They are a semi-aggressive species. They can be kept with peaceful fish (with monitoring), semi-aggressive fish and slow swimmer fish. All fish in the tank must be larger than your Compressed Cichlid as they are predatory.

Can they be bred in captivity?

The Compressed Cichlid is an egg layer and requires sheltered areas to lay them. When kept in good condition females can spawn every 25-35 days, and will lay up to 300 eggs at a time. Pairs can become territorial while breeding, the female will guard the eggs while the male guards the territory.
