This species is native to southern Brazil, Paraguay and northern Argentina.

What is the ideal number to keep together?

Can be kept on their own in a pair - no more than 1 pair per tank.

Water temperatures should range between 20 – 26 °C and pH should be between 5.0 – 8.0.

What should you feed them?

Umbrella cichlids should be fed live and frozen foods such as Artemia, Daphnia and bloodworm. A high-quality pellet food can also be offered.

How compatible are they with other fish?

Can be kept in a general community aquarium. Best not kept with other species of Apistogramma or small species that can be easy prey, otherwise they are quite happy living with other fish species.

Can they be bred in captivity?

This species can be bred in captivity - The female is responsible for care of eggs and fry and in smaller sized fish tanks the male may need to be removed as she may become hyper-aggressive.
